Extra Time for Tests
Some ADD individuals may do better with extra time for tests. This will allow them to get the information they have in their heads out onto the paper, without undue pressure taking away their ability to perform. This accommodation may require more approval than the teacher is able to provide, and should be discussed with the special education teacher, or the school administration.
Nurture Your Child or Teenâs Interests or Passions
Many students with ADD have one or two subjects that are much harder for them, and one or two subjects which come more easily. In high school, kids with ADD can feel that subjects just have no relevance to them, and they arenât interested (the classic question: How is this history class relevant to my life?). In the early years of education, there are so many mandatory requirements that it can be hard for an ADD student who struggles in a particular area. However, when he or she gets to high school, in particular the later years of high school, it can be easier for him to choose subjects he likes. And we know that anyone with ADD focuses much better on subjects that he likes.
While many educators spend a lot of time helping students with their weaknessesâwhich is necessaryâI encourage you as a parent to help to nurture your son or daughterâs strengths. If they are great at photography, see if you can get enriching classes or activities outside of school. If they love writing, or geography, or something else, encourage them, and celebrate any success that they have dramatically. Your enthusiastic support can make a big difference. You can also reassure your child that when he gets far enough in school, he wonât have to take math anymore, and he can take a lot more of the arts (or whatever his area of interest is). And if he goes to a post-secondary school, he can focus exactly on what it is he loves (i.e. college for photography, graphic design, writing, etc.).
